I could not commit time to the organization during its early years because my domestic responsibilities but have been leading it for the past 10 years. During this period I have implemented over a 100 projects on biomass energy & environment. These have covered different aspects of the innovation process from idea generation, technology development, participatory rural processes for acceptance of innovation and creation of commercial mechanisms leading to higher productivity and profitability in rural industries. I accepted the Ashden international energy champion award 2008 on behalf of TIDE for introducing energy efficient innovations for small businesses. In 2009 the key members of the management of TIDE including me started Sustaintech India Pvt. Ltd. (SIPL) as a social enterprise aimed at rapid replication of innovative energy efficient wood stoves for street food vendors. The Chairman, TIDE and I was also a finalist of the Social Entrepreneur of the year of the Schwab Foundation in 2006 and was recognized with the woman achiever of the year award 2009 by the Rotary Club of Bangalore.
I am also managing a team that is working in association with the Tea Board of India, Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of India for introducing energy use reform in the tea industry. In this project we are demonstrating a multi stake holder approach for achieving impact. I have been the Executive Editor of “Energy for Sustainable Development” a journal of the International Energy Initiative and am currently the Editor of e-net an energy networking magazine in south Asia. I am a member of Energia, the international network on gender and energy and a TED India Fellow. I am an alumnus of IIT Bombay.
In the early stage of my engineering education and career I was exposed to inspirational mentors who believed that a scientist must be socially engaged and they demonstrated through their work that technology can be an instrument of delivering public good. Working with them I realized that most developmental, poverty alleviation programs focus on welfare & health, micro credit, training, education etc. Successful development and transfer of technology that is needed and can be used is uncommon. I realized that there is an urgent need to review the technology agenda and enable it to be used as an instrument for delivering public good. There was also need to create success stories and precedents that tell a happy tale. I was aware that this required monumental effort, resources, a commitment to both technology and development and a conviction that technology can and must be a part of the solution. I realized that I must work towards securing this objective. // Svati Bhogle is the Chairperson of TIDE, a nonprofit that specializes in biomass combustion technologies.
